A yearly overview of the clues of upcoming titles provided by Criterion and Jason Polan in the monthly newsletter. Proudly pun-ful, characteristically corny, and always awaited with bated breath.
A fun year of clues and statements both. A big year for Criterion as bluray comes to the line, although we only get one fairly indirect clue of what’s to come. Tati comes back to the canon with a great addition, and you’d be forgiven if you thought Antoine was a brother of Jacques just based on the first two-thirds of that title. Guy Maddin roars in with a sorta silent and Rossellini tosses in some TV. One strong boxset from Imamura and one ‘shoulda been’ boxset from Ophuls are both very welcome. Add some swashbuckling, supreme melodrama, spies, and Bunuel’s take on Big Brother and you’ve got a very strong year. And that’s even before you add Eddie Coyle’s friends and some nitroglycerin in high definition!
